Callawassie Island
Okatie, SC

Callawassie Island is a unique 889-acre island surrounded by the Okatie and Colleton Rivers and scenic Chechessee Creek.  Located halfway between Hilton Head Island and Beaufort it offers residents seclusion and privacy without isolation. Callawassie is also in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry.  It represents the epitome of South Carolina Lowcountry living.  The island´s 6,000 year history of human habitation is evident with several ancient shell mounds and a fire-brick ruin of an old sugar mill, preserved as part of a community park.  Callawassie is accessed by a convenient causeway linking it to the mainland and allows no commercial or business centers with the population density low, allowing only one person per acre.  The property offers panoramic views of beautiful salt marshes, tranquil lagoons, ancient forests and award winning golf courses.  On any given day, residents can be seen crabbing, shrimping, boating or kayaking on the waters surrounding their home.  Callawassie Island was selected as on of America´s top twenty retirement communities for two years running by New Choices Magazine.  The central location is a big draw for couples who work in or between Beaufort and Hilton Head.

Amenities
The hub of the social scene on Callawassie Island is the Clubhouse, a 26,000-square-foot facility with casual and formal dining rooms serving traditional, regional cuisine and a neighborhood pub.  The Lowcountry Clubhouse overlooks beautiful views of the tidal marsh and the three finishing holes of the island´s famed Tom Fazio designed golf course.  The 27-hole course was recognized by Golf Week as one of South Carolina´s top five best.  Outside the Clubhouse is a terrace garden, complete with a large "adults only" pool, cabana, snack bar, and six Har-Tru tennis courts.  Families can enjoy the River Club on the south end of the island, a casual cabana-style clubhouse with meeting rooms, barbecue and picnic facilities as well as a pool.  Some of the best inshore fishing is found in the surrounding tidal creeks and rivers and deep water fishing is accessible through Port Royal Sound.  Review some facts and figures about Callawassie Island by clicking here.
